The Cat's Meow

The Cat’s Meow

Sitting in my kitchen

after teaching philosophy

I feel I’ve discovered the meaning of life:

we’re all like white blood cells

in the body of the universe

doing what we can to help

when we are called

just like my father did as a fireman whenever there was a fire.

When this thought ends

from my rooftop I hear a meowing cry

I might have ignored another time

but since answering calls is tonight the meaning of life

I walk out onto the roof

where I see a skinny calico cat.

I give it some milk.

In the morning with my girlfriend’s help

I pull the cat down the fire escape

while the cat grips tightly on the railing.

Since I am stronger than a seven pound cat

I bring the cat to the parking lot

where it immediately hides under a car.

My girlfriend says you now have a cat.

I name the cat Uni for Universe.

His name and meows often remind me

keep meowing for response

keep responding to meows.

December 25 Each Day’s Birth Day

no solid food
frees from moods
so wind I breathe
dances in me
nourishing cells
guiding me well

I’d like to fly
even if I die
by diving in
to loving wind
but I’m a man
who walks on sand

when moved by greed
to rush seize squeeze
I want to scream
in this bad dream
stone please be bread
or I’ll be dead

but freeze my greed
until you seed
desires to free
humanity
with loving care
that’s always there

pray all adore
the folks next store
not just me
it’s too easy
divinity’s
in all we see

all hearts please bleed
for we who need
caring that all
unique ways called
may freely be
community

We are the Sons and Daughters of Earth, Air, Fire and Water

Because I am a prodigal son,
far from parents, lost amidst pigs longing for the pods they eat,
I go to have my life transformed by John the Baptizer.
When immersed by John’s hands
my head feels he understands
we need to be re-conceived
by a love that always frees.
My first gulp of air
feels breath’s a prayer
creating with love
peaceful as a dove
birth of an adult child
who’ll find how in the wild
earth water sun and sky
parent us or we die

Who is Our Father

Where is Our Father

A childless old priest, Zachariah,

honored to alone burn incense in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem,

is paralyzed with awe when a radiant messenger greets him saying,

“Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son.”
Zachariah doubts these words promising that his dream will come true

so he is dammed speechless until my cousin John is born.

Elizabeth’s pregnancy, like my mother Mary’s, is traumatic.
Elizabeth hides for five months.
After her son is born, Zachariah lets Elizabeth name him John,
although no one in the family ever had that name.

Zachariah, like my father Joseph, must have wondered who

fathered his son.

No wonder John and I look for a father in the sky.

Aware Air Cares

Every spring we travel to Jerusalem where our Passover Seder
forever inspires us to create new ways to be free.
When I am twelve, while my parents are journeying home,
they are shocked I am missing.
After searching for three days
they are amazed to find me teaching adults in the temple.
I tell my negligent parents to join my new family
breathing in nourishing air
a parent who always cares.

Freedom from Trauma

Freedom from Trauma

When the king hears that a miraculous child is born
he murders all infants in our neighborhood.
I escape to Egypt with the trauma of knowing
that my existence
after conception
and again after birth
causes catastrophe.
In Egypt singing songs on Passover
imagining we are slaves yearning and learning to be free
moves us to believe we’ll find through life’s tragedies
miraculous ways

Unending Mending

Before I take a breath my body and blood destroy love
by swelling my mother Mary’s womb
I move her fiance Joseph to divorce her
until Joseph’s love for Mary inspires him to hear in a dream
that a messenger from god is my father.
When Joseph and Mary marry
I am in a loving family
who move people who know us
when disconnected
to connect imaginatively.

Love Freeze

Love Freeze

when I love and care

I am free to hate

feel I barely bear

how deeply we grate

have no interest

in what you feel say

till passing this test

we're o.k. today

free me

the joy when taught
how to live well
from all I’ve wrought
from living hell

makes all they say
how now to be
not block the way

of being me

how now to be

Weigh a Head

when our head balances on top of our spine
we get into our head and out of our mind
letting weight rebound through feet seat heart crown
we rise through sky while we’re rooted in ground

Organs Music

words can be shields

from what we feel

keep us away

by what we say

and what we think

til thoughts/words stink
